Cornell University Brochure on Women
Firefighters' Breast Cancer Risk
The Cornell Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental
Risk Factors (BCERF) makes "sense of the science" and
provides information on chemical exposures that may increase the
risk of developing breast cancer.
BCERF
has worked with members of the Fire Service Women of New York State
to develop an easy to understand brochure on chemical exposures
of concern generated by thermal decomposition in structural and
non-structural fires scenarios. The brochure stresses the importance
of wearing Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) at all phases
of fire fighting, including inspection, overhaul and salvage operations.
You can read the brochure on line in English or Spanish, or download
a formatted copy. Individual or bulk print copies of this colorful
brochure can be requested by contacting BCERF by phone (607)
254-2893 or email to lcn4@cornell.edu (Lyn Netter, Administrative
Assistant). Hard copies of the Alert brochure are provided free
to firefighters and emergency responders (police and EMTs) in
New York State through a grant from the New York State Department
of Health.
